Safer Eco-Friendly Haircare

Updated: Aug 28, 2023

Some of my favorite grooming tools & companies to work with.

A curated list of more transparent professional haircare for those looking for less synthetics.

I personally have worked with these products and would recommend them to my guests according to their hair needs. We found that limiting the styling products we had in the salon to the only necessary, and using them as directed, reduced our reactions from in-salon work.

These are my favorite products and companies to work with, I highly recommend them because they are companies that really care about the industry and their impact on the earth. Their initiatives to offset the damage we do I respect and want others to know about them too.

CULT + KING Is my number one choice to recommend because of their transparency in ingredients, and their use of sustainable refillable packaging like glass, aluminum, and bamboo. The quality of C+K's botanical formulas and scents is like none other found on the professional market, not one client would disagree. There is something for everyone in this line. You can share products with your entire family. If you are a hairstylist looking for a beautiful and functional line to work with that your clients will absolutely adore, you need to try this line. Tonik is a great cutting spray, and something all your clients should be using on their scalps to prevent hair loss and maintain scalp health, Jelly and Style is a truly life-changing product and will make styling a breeze no matter if you are air drying or creating a soft luxuriously polished blowout.

If you do not know where to start try a Hairstory Kit. I adore Hairstory, they created an incredible cream cleanser that replaces shampoo and conditioner, my hair has been a great challenge over the years and New Wash has completely taken away my dreaded wash day. Let me just say it is truly the only product I have found as a stylist that I can use on 98 percent of clients. It balanced the hair's pH better than anything I've used, and I have tried so much out there!

I desire to educate everyone on how to use New Wash to their advantage and reduce their plastic waste and synthetic exposure dramatically. Here's my disclaimer with HS STYLING products as I have them up here in the shop because of their transparent ingredients and ability to actually work and satisfy, most of their products are refillable now, and they continue to reduce their plastics for their styling products, which honestly I am not a fan of considering there are alternatives on the market, they could and should do better in that area. They could be leaders in that area, but they still choose not to. I would love to see them swap all their products to something else. I have heard that they do not want to do glass because of safety issues, which, again I disagree with since there are many lines that use glass, and dang do they feel fancy, and I have never broken any of their glass. I am not comfortable recommending anyone invest in products that are not sustainable for the earth, I personally try to recommend the more sustainable choice, and when there is no equivalent I recommend a product that's ingredients are better than the synthetic fragrance brands on the market that hide toxic ingredient under their secret fragrance blend. Hairstory is like the bridge between super toxic haircare on the professional market to cleaner haircare. It shares much of the intent and goals of a cleaner haircare world, like the sharing of their ingredients transparently where you purchase the products, but it still has ingredients that some may have a reaction to. For instance, even tho they do not use any synthetics for their fragrance, they do use essential oils, ones that have noted toxicity and reactions, but hey at least they show that on their packaging, and people can look up the warnings of that essential oil themselves and choose if it is right for them.

Hairstory has greatly improved its packaging, continuing to reduce almost every year. New wash is better than anything I have found on the professional hair care market. I personally do not believe they are a company that green washes, and that's why I am making an extra effort to voice the negatives along with the benefits.

Hairstory has majorly impressed me with their constant improvements and their eco goals, so no doubt they will eventually improve upon their packaging.

Hey Stylists!

I highly recommend stylists that who experience dermatitis switch to New Wash, many dermatitis reactions can be caused by the synthetic detergents and hidden ingredients found in the synthetic fragrance labeled as "proprietary blend" or 'perfume' or 'parfum'.

I highly recommend every stylist try New Wash as it is a game changer, especially for those that do a lot of chemical work, it does a great job of balancing the pH and it extends the life of your toners, I personally replaced my back bar shampoos, conditioners, and masks with all three formulas. The only addition to that was a purple toning shampoo, which we found we rarely needed to use. But guess what!? Now Hairstory has a violet pigment to add to New Wash, I personally have not tried it yet, but I had to add it in here so you know about it, and don't have to use a different violet shampoo. Hairstory has a great business plan where you can make passive income off your reoccurring sales from your clients that use your link to get products. Subscribe and save drastically reduces a household's plastic consumption of beauty products, getting their new wash packs delivered when they run out instead of having to come to the salon or buy elsewhere. It truly helps stylists have a sustainable wage, most product lines you only get a commission from one sale, even tho you promote and use the product all the time, stylists that educate about the use of their products I personally believe are entitled to a lifetime cut of the product sales because they are doing the work to sell and keep it on the market, Hairstory is the only company I know of to date that has this structure. No, it is not a MLM scheme because you never have to pay to have a yearly membership to get a wholesale price, you have a direct shopping link from the get-go. You just have to have to buy their back bar (which is a killer deal in the first place. The only thing to keep your account active is to actually use it, so just sell a product to three people via your direct shopping link HS will assign you and it will be active. It's easy to think of more than three clients that would fall in love with New Wash and benefit from it. What I did was test it on three clients after Hairstory sent me a pouch (bottle at the time) to try, and I gave them a link because they loved it and they had it shipped to them in a few days.

FYH BRUSH

Roxie Jane Hunt is a creative inspiration and beautiful soul, she truly understands the benefits of taking time to refocus and heal, and she facilitates humans to take a journey down the road to self-care through a ritual of brushing. She introduced me to brushing with her custom boar and nylon bristle brush that she gifted me ( I literally wept during my first brush session). It totally changed my view on scalp care and the ritual of grooming we have somehow lost over the last two decades. It is such a valuable free tool to relieve daily stress, wash less and balance the scalp and the issues that arise within it. Roxie and I collaborated on a design, my great mate and client Katy designed something I had in mind, an ode to Dr. Steve Brule, if you don't know who that is you gotta go look that up now...

Kind, lovely, gentle, and powerful. That is how I would describe the creator of Huihui, Lori Huitron. If you haven't met Lori you gotta hop on over to her IG. She is one of the sweetest souls I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Lori created a beautiful oil to assist in hair growth and darling, it does work! This is my number one recommended scalp oil to brush with. Drop it in after a hard day, massage, brush and let your scalp soak in those nutrients overnight. Wash in am with New Wash or your fav gentle cleanser.

Some other beautiful lines to check out that I plan to write more in the future about are FORET and AFTERWORLD ORGANICS, which are also amazing!

There are a few other lines out there that are marketed as non-toxic or clean beauty products but I have had stylists and clients note reactions to using some of the haircare. Like GM Reverie milk, a metal taste in the mouth seems to be pretty common for stylists that use that, including me. I have never reviewed their MSDS but I am curious about their 'aromas'.

I have chosen to not recommend hair care that I have noted to have 10 or more reactions until I can distinguish what may be causing sensitivity or reaction.

I don't know all the emerging clean beauty lines out there yet so please don't take it as me saying it's not safe or good because it's not on here yet. I just only put what I have tried so far and as you can see I don't put every product in a line up here, that's because the rest of the products I don't use as often and I truly believe in only recommending something I love and have tested to see it's results I also don't believe you should have to buy every product in a hair care line just to have great hair.

"When switching to a cleaner lines I do not recommend mixing non toxic botanical hair care with synthetic products..."

When switching to a cleaner line, I do not recommend mixing non-toxic botanical hair care with synthetic products, every time someone does this they do not experience the true freeing effects of the non-toxic hair care. If there is a sustainable option try that one first, don't be afraid to put away your synthetics for a month to truly get a break from the toxic effects you may not even notice until you cut it out. Use your judgment when picking out your grooming care, and avoid synthetics and plastics as much as possible.

That's all for today folks! Thanks for reading!

xx hair huggers!
